Who lives in a house like this?

Now that we have our own house and have started making it into our home, we can tell you all about it. Fearghal has even done this nifty floor plan so it will make sense to you!

The house is a bungalow within the gardens of our landlord’s house, but completely fenced off from them. Our landlords are a very nice Afrikaans family called the Strauss’. Frik works in “Bargain Builders”, which comes in handy when jobs need done around the place, and Martemarie is the bookkeeper at the pharmacy. They have 2 young sons who almost seem to be getting used to us, after 5 months of staring and grinning. They also have 4 crazy dashounds, one of which recently had 6 crazy puppies, and our favourite, Luca, the Rhodesian Ridgeback, who spends much of his time on our patio, looking in longingly!
So, let me take you on a tour of our house!
First is the kitchen. It has all the basics – oh except for a washing machine, no one we know has one of those! There is a freezer, which I didn’t expect to have, but we try not to overstock it because of all the power cuts.
From the kitchen a kind-of-almost-corridor leads into the lounge. This is our main room now, so we have put up lots of pictures here, and the big African wall hanging I got Fearghal for Christmas. We have a big desk too, though mercifully we never have to bring work home here, it is good for writing letters etc.
Next to the lounge is a bit of an odd room, which looks like a long veranda that has been walled in. Between the two rooms is just windows. We are using one half as a dining room (we’ve never had one in the UK, and yet we have one in Africa!) and the other half is, well, completely empty! A good place for me to do yoga.
There are 2 bedrooms, we have the smaller one, as it has more wardrobe space, and you, my dear friends shall have the bigger one when you come to visit. The big bedroom has an en suite (another first for us!), and we use the separate toilet and bathroom, which is rather nice.
So, that about covers it. No mud hut, no thatch roof, all very modern and pleasant! Have a look inside on Flickr.

hi just thought we'd need to touch base to let you know to sell any shares you may have in Guinness or Red wine companies as Helen is up the duff. Due we reckon 24th August, 1st scan was on Friday. Good to read about your travels and living arrangements: Sometimes I think we don't have a washing machine either. I suppose coming to visit has now been scuppered or at the very least made more difficult. I looked you up on Skype 2 secs it took to find Aileen & Fearghal. Got broadband this week so everything now faster. Helen got a new job with Children in cross fire and has already been offered to go to Kenya she has told her boss yet good job he is blind (yes he is literally). www.childrenincrossfire.org Must go and get a cup of Tea. Lots of hugs Tom and Helen
